Engineering Training

At Lothian we have a strong emphasis on colleague training. We aim to ensure an effective training proposal that supports increased knowledge about current and constantly advancing vehicle technology.

We have also started to plan for the introduction of detailed electrical training as the fleet begins the journey to zero emission technology.

Across 2024, all engineering colleagues will have the opportunity to attend a variety of training courses including those outlined below.

Fault Training - Basic Systems

Course Overview
  • Understanding fundamental electrical principles (Ohm’s and Watt’s Law)
  • Working safely on vehicle systems and carrying out quality wiring repairs
  • Using a multimeter to measure voltage, current and resistance
  • Navigating wiring schematics to identify and isolate individual circuits
  • Applying a systematic approach to electrical fault finding using VTT and GD
  • Making an informed judgement on the condition of a component
  • Diagnosing confidently a non-ECU system using a variety of techniques

PSV - INSPECTION COURSE

Course Overview
  • Following a systematic and consistent inspection routine
  • Identifying and applying the correct inspection method to all testable items
  • Making an informed judgement based on the latest available information
  • Locating, navigating and interpreting the latest DVSA MOT inspection manual
  • Reporting correctly on the inspection outcomes
  • Understanding the Operator Compliance Risk Score (OCRS)
  • Understanding the testable items inspect on a PSV at MOT and PMI
  • Accurately categorising deficiencies – Minor – Major – Dangerous
  • Learning Manufacturers permitted limits
  • Learning the systematic inspection process
  • Learning brake performance criteria
  • Undertaking practical exercises and assessment

Course Overview
  • Learning the basic skills to access roadside situations likely to encounter in the job
  • Learning how to apply dynamic risk assessment to ensure that an ever-changing environment is assessed and dealt with appropriately
  • Ensuring the safety of the recovery operator, potential casualties and the general public
  • Undertaking a mandatory theory test
  • Completing successfully a practical assessment

Impact/ Techtool and guided diagnostics -

  • Inputting the correct details accurately.
  • Locating the correct function groups and sub groups.
  • Deciding on the Information type.

  • Accurately sign in and Identify the vehicle
  • Perform common tests and calibrations

Fire risk assessent –

  • To raise awareness of potential fire risks on vehicles.
  • To understand the impact of fire.
  • To understand why fires occur on motor vehicles.
  • Be able to inspect a vehicle and identify potential fire risks.

7900 Body electrics –

  • Locating the diagnostic information for a specified vehicle Body Type.
  • Understanding the Body electrical diagrams
  • Interpreting symbols and codes used in diagrams.
  • Identifying data link systems and communications used in circuits.
  • Locating circuits & components on the vehicle.
  • Put the navigation/identification into practice on the training vehicle.
  • Accurately locating ECU and body modules.
  • Accurately testing and measuring circuits at specific points.
  • Rectify faults and verify correct operation after repair

B13R Technical introduction –

  • Identify components and chassis layout.
  • Discuss and agree service and maintenance procedures.
  • Identify and describe specific system operation, i.e I-Start,
  • Locate service and maintenance routines using Volvo IMPACT.
  • Perform service and maintenance checks.
